Fushigi Yuugi means, literally translated from Japanese, The Mysterious Play. The show is basically about a world which exists within a prophetic book called "The Four Gods", based upon the Chinese cult that believed in sacrificing a virgin preistess to bring about the coming of one of the four Beast Gods.
The book sucks in Miaka and Yui, best friends for most of their lives. There, Miaka agrees to become the Priestess of Sukaku of Konan, or Suzaku no Miko (Japanese). She is told to gather the Suzaku Seven (Suzaku Seishi) to call the god Sukaku. She at first agrees, but later Yui takes her place within the book and believes herself to be raped, blaming Miaka for not saving her, and desciding to seperate her from her now beloved Sukaku Seven warrior Tamahome with the help of Seiiryou Seven warrior Nakago, who has now convinced her to become the Seirryou no Miko, therefore Miaka's sworn enemy. And so begins the Mysterious Play.
